TGWEREU has witnessed a notable surge in local patronage of its tourism facilities this festive season, driven by the opening of new resorts and leisure centres that have expanded recreational options for residents and visitors alike.
The addition of a resort at Ngamo Dam and a Leisure Centre near Destiny Memorial Park complements existing attractions, including White Waters Resort and the artificial beach at Sunset Gardens, signalling sustained growth in the city’s tourism sector.
Despite intermittent rains on Christmas Day, holidaymakers enjoyed a variety of activities.
“This is one of the best Christmases in recent years. The country is enjoying some peace, and there is no pressure on fuel while goods are there on the shelves.
“It is the best Christmas for me. I have managed to do some swimming and bike riding activities. We are really enjoying.
“It is something unique but very exciting to experience such services here in Gweru. We used to see such activities on TV as they were reserved for Victoria Falls and other resorts, but now, we can also enjoy them.”
On the gastronomy tourism front, Gweru experienced the establishment of several restaurants with Highway Gastro between Kwekwe and Gweru and Kuhari restaurant in Gweru, proving that traditional dishes are becoming popular among locals.
“Traditional foods are helping in dealing with chronic ailments, and people are enjoying rural treats in an urban setup,” Manager Kuhari Restaurant Mr Xolani Nyathi said.
“I came to enjoy the traditional dishes here. I usually spend my Christmas back at home, but this year I did not feel the difference after eating traditional stuff,” a customer said.
Reflecting broader economic trends, Zimbabwe’s tourism sector surpassed both mining and agriculture in 2024, contributing 15% to national Gross Domestic Product, demonstrating its growing importance in regional development and community recreation.
