Women’s baseball gains momentum as Zimbabwe hosts regional championship

Women’s baseball in Zimbabwe is gaining traction as the country hosts a three-day African Women’s Baseball Championship, bringing together the national women’s teams of Zimbabwe and South Africa in a decisive tournament to determine Africa’s sole representative at the 2026 Women’s Baseball World Cup.

The championship, organised by the Zimbabwe Baseball Association (ZBA), forms part of broader efforts to expose local players to high-level international competition and accelerate the development of the women’s game.

Zimbabwe fielded both under-18 and senior teams but suffered defeats in the opening matches, losing 16–9 in the under-18 fixture and 22–7 in the senior encounter. Despite the results, ZBA officials say the primary objective remains long-term growth and competitiveness rather than immediate outcomes.

ZBA administrator Mr Kudzionera Madhodha said competing against South Africa, the continent’s most established women’s baseball nation, was a vital learning experience for Zimbabwean players.

Officials confirmed that, irrespective of the tournament’s final outcome, Zimbabwe will be officially recognised as the second African nation to be ranked in women’s baseball, marking a significant milestone in the country’s sporting development.

The championship has also been hailed as a critical platform for skills development, competitiveness and international exposure, while underscoring the growing participation of women in baseball across the region.

ZBA says it remains committed to strengthening grassroots programmes and increasing international engagement as part of efforts to build a sustainable and competitive women’s baseball programme in Zimbabwe
