Universal health coverage drive advances with new Zaka clinics

ACCESS to primary healthcare has significantly improved in Zaka following the establishment of two new clinics, equipped with hospital beds, maternity support facilities and a steady supply of essential medicines.

This has spared villagers long, costly journeys and strengthened the push toward universal health coverage. For Ms Gamuchirai Madamombe, reaching Murerekwa Clinic by midday after her household and field chores is now possible, proof of how new clinics are bringing health services closer to communities.

She is now being attended to within 20 minutes, and soon after, she is on her way back home.

“The Clinic is helping us a lot as a community. I wanted to have my BP checked and get treatment for my baby. Now i can afford to come in the afternoon because the Clinic is nearby and we are confident that we will get the services we need,” she said.

Other patients like Mr Tarwirei Zhou echo similar sentiments, noting the new health facility has brought convenience and restored their dignity.

“Before the establishment of this Clinic, we used to go to Ndanga or Jerera, and we would pay a lot. It was very difficult for many villagers, hence increased maternal mortality. Now this development is a major relief, and we are happy that the Clinic has very good staff,” he said.

“The infrastructure established here is state of the art, and there is a mother’s shelter, accommodation for nurses and enough borehole water, which is also benefiting the community,” a community member added.

This health facility and Chiromo Clinic, constructed under the devolution programme, have also received a major boost after sugar-producing giant, Tongaat Huletts, donated medical supplies and hospital beds worth US$60 000.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we are involved in education, health and sport, so this is our contribution to the health sector following a request for assistance from the Zaka district. Tongaat Huletts remains committed to supporting government efforts in strengthening healthcare delivery systems in communities around our operations,” Corporate and Industry Affairs Executive for Tongaat Huletts Zimbabwe, Dr Delia Garwe said.

The support has excited the Local leadership in Zaka, fulfilling a long-cherished dream.

“As a District, we are happy with this development. This comes following the establishment of these two clinics, which are playing a key role in assisting the Zaka Community. Our goal is to ensure improved access to healthcare services, especially in rural communities,” Zaka District Medical Officer, Dr Anesu Mukachana said.

“The Murerekwa Clinic opened its doors in September this year, and we are serving 40 to 50 patients on a daily basis. The coming in of more resources at the institution will improve the efficiency of the institution,” In Charge of Murerekwa Clinic, Gwanyanya Kudakwashe said.

The expansion of health infrastructure across Zimbabwe continues to reflect the Second Republic’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare for all citizens.
