ZIMBABWE’s top referee, Brighton Chimene, has been selected as one of the match officials for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a significant milestone for local officiating.
Chimene who has been a leading light in the country is the only Zimbabwean on the list of 73 match officials assigned for the tournament that kicks off next month.
His is listed among those that will be in charger of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
The celebrated referee attended a Confederation of African Football, Video Match Officials training in Egypt last month.
Chimene’s selection ends a 17-year absence of Zimbabwean referees at AFCON, with Kenny Marange being the last to officiate at the 2008 edition.
