A new partnership between UNICEF Zimbabwe and Wild Horizons, a leading Victoria Falls-based tourism company, is set to transform schools in the resort city and surrounding communities through the introduction of climate-resilient infrastructure and renewable energy solutions.

The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Victoria Falls on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to improve access to clean water, sanitation, and sustainable energy in local schools.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance community resilience and promote environmental sustainability in the face of growing climate challenges.

“Wild Horizons is built on the foundation of community and this partnership with UNICEF allows us to expand that commitment ensuring healthier schools, stronger families, and a greener future. We are combining our resources and expertise to improve the lives of children and families while also contributing to environmental sustainability. Together, we can create a model of resilience that inspires far beyond Victoria Falls,” Wild Horizons’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr Gary Archer said.

UNICEF Zimbabwe Representative, Ms Etona Ekole, said the collaboration demonstrates the power of partnerships between the private sector and development organisations in advancing sustainable solutions.

“This partnership is a powerful example of how business and development can come together to create sustainable solutions for children and their communities. By combining UNICEF’s child-focused programming with Wild Horizons’ commitment to protecting the environment and empowering communities, we are building models of climate resilience that can be scaled across Zimbabwe.”

Local education authorities have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to improve learning conditions and promote environmental responsibility among young people.

“As the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, we believe that this marks an important milestone in promoting improved sanitation, hygiene, environmental sustainability within our schools and communities,” Hwange District Inspector Office’s representative, Mr Lunguza Ndlovu noted.

The programme complements the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Green Zimbabwe Initiative and supports the country’s national climate adaptation agenda, aligning with the government’s broader goals under Vision 2030.
