THE 22nd ZANU PF National People’s Conference ended in Mutare on Saturday with a unanimous agreement to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office beyond 2028 to 2030.

This was among a cocktail of resolutions aimed at promoting economic growth and strengthening the party, with the conference  also calling on the party and government to set in motion the legal process to extend President Mnangagwa’s term in office to 2030.

ZANU-PF secretary for Legal Affairs Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi tabled the resolution at the ZANU-PF National People’s Conference in Mutare, with delegates unanimously endorsing the implementation of the resolution.

“In recognition of the extensive developmental milestones under the leadership of the President, it is resolved that President Mnangagwa’s term of office be extended to 2030. This conference reaffirms this resolution, and the Party and the government should urgently roll out its implementation. The resolution was tabled during the last conference and raised again during this conference. The resolution should be implemented before the next conference,” he said.

Other key resolutions adopted include a renewed focus on growing the party’s support base, continuing with infrastructure development projects, stepping up economic empowerment initiatives, and increasing resources towards irrigation development and promoting industrial growth.

The party also resolved to intensify efforts towards macroeconomic stability, inclusive growth, upscaling efforts to fight drug and substance abuse, and strengthening social safety nets, in line with Vision 2030.

“There is a need to capacitate the Consumer Protection Commission to protect consumers. We recommend the continued establishment of irrigation schemes to improve food security. The government should ensure more resources are channelled towards social safety nets. There is a need to continuously review the conditions of public sector workers and pensioners, as well as the establishment of a Road Accidents Fund. We also need to support the Zig currency to make it more accessible and attractive, to maintain public confidence in the local currency. There is a need to prioritise value addition and beneficiation to promote local economic development,” Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi added.

The conference also recommended speeding up road rehabilitation works as well as reviving the country’s railway sector, and upgrading border posts to promote trade.

The need to scale up renewable energy support to reduce pressure on the national grid was also noted, with calls to protect wetlands also being raised.

With the conference now concluded, the party says it is ready to implement the resolutions and ensure that Zimbabwe continues on a path of growth, unity, and prosperity.
