VICTORIA Falls continues to be a sport tourism destination of choice. This comes after the wetland city hosted a three-nation schools swimming tournament this week.

As Zimbabwe pushes to promote sport tourism, the swimming tournament featuring schools from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana held in Victoria Falls this week is a tangible milestone in this national vision.

Tourism players are optimistic about the long-term benefits for the local economy and the country’s global image.

“Victoria Falls remains the perfect destination to host international sporting events, and we have proven we can do it. This tournament is only the beginning. Events like these position Victoria Falls not only as a sports destination but also as a prime venue for various international gatherings. Visitors book our hotels, explore the Falls, and become ambassadors for the city when they return home,” said Tourism Executive, Mrs Mercy Tembo.

Participants from Botswana and Zambia said the experience was both competitive and enriching.

“I am from Botswana. Competing here helps me stay sharp and gives me a chance to see amazing places like Victoria Falls. It’s also great to meet other swimmers and make new friends,” a participant noted.

“I am from Zambia. This tournament helps me stay in shape and also exposes me to new cultures and people. It’s been a great experience,” another participant added.

Organisers and school authorities highlighted the broader educational and developmental value of such tournaments.

“Our students are fit and prepared for future competitions, and they also learn about new cultures through this interaction in Victoria Falls,” Mother Touch International School, Headmistress, Mrs Penny Gunney said.

“This event promotes global citizenship, sportsmanship, cultural exchange, networking, and skills development. It is a wholesome experience, full of fun, learning, and celebration,” Mother Touch Group of Schools CEO, Mrs Salome Mutsinze noted.

Other international sporting tournaments held in Victoria Falls in recent months include the Sterling Hotels International Pairs Golf Tournament and the 15th International Military Sports Council (CISM) golf tournament.

Victoria Falls aspires to become a premier destination for hosting major sporting events, similar to Las Vegas in the US and Dubai in the UAE.
