NATIONAL Hero, Brigadier General (Rtd) Mpandasekwa Mzheri, has been remembered not only as a decorated soldier of the liberation struggle but also as a devout Christian and compassionate community leader.
Congregants from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe gathered on Sunday for a moving church service held in his honour, where heartfelt tributes painted a portrait of a humble, God-fearing man devoted to faith and service.
Family, friends, and fellow worshippers described the late national hero as a man whose commitment to the church mirrored his dedication to national duty, noting that his Christian values guided his leadership and personal life.
“He was a soft-spoken man who loved the work of Christ. He was one of the founders of the church in Kwekwe. He was a protector,” church member, Nyasha said.
“He would always chip in when anything was needed at church. He was a peacemaker as he did not want people to be violent when they had disagreements in the church,” church member, Gladys said.
“He helped me and my family for a long time. He preached what he lived because he was so loving and understanding. We have really lost a devoted helper,” church member, Elia said.
“We congregated together in Mbare, and he was involved in church things. He would volunteer his time and resources for the gospel. He was a soldier for Christ,” a church member, Fanuel said.
From his home, the body of the gallant son was driven back to Charles Gumbo Barracks, where it will lie in state ahead of burial this Monday.
