THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) visited Gwanda this Tuesday as part of its nationwide public consultations for the National Anti-Corruption Strategy Two (NACS2).

The multi-stakeholder awareness campaign targets civic organisations, government departments, and churches, aiming to curb corruption at all levels of society.

Participants in Gwanda emphasised that the fight against corruption must start at the grassroots level.

“Unregulated transporters are creating opportunities for corruption through bribes, and it should be nipped in the bud,” one participant said.

“There is a need for capacitation of law enforcement agents so that we can effectively tackle corruption,” added another.

Mr Edward Mandeya, Director Finance in the Ministry of Provincial Affairs and Devolution, said corruption undermines development and erodes public trust.

“Corruption perpetuates inequality and is a major hindrance to achieving our goals, ensuring that everyone benefits from our progress,” he said.

The consultative meetings have also been held in Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru, and Harare.

Commissioner Chido Madiwa, Chairperson of ZACC’s Prevention of Corruption Committee said, “As we build on this momentum, we are proud to embark on NACS2, which will further strengthen our efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency and accountability in our nation. The strategy is anchored on five pillars, including legal reform, institutional reform, enforcement and priority setting, while the public pillar focuses on engaging communities on anti-corruption initiatives.”

The consultations are intended to identify corruption risks and ensure that Zimbabwe’s strategy aligns with the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
