RURAL communities across Zimbabwe are increasingly accessing health services with ease, following fresh government investments in primary health care facilities.
At Dazi Health Post in Nyanga, villagers say the new facility has transformed their lives by bringing essential services closer to their doorsteps.
“Now we don’t have to travel all the way to Nyanga District Hospital for small illnesses. The nurses here give us medicine, and we are treated quickly,” said one villager.
Another added, “My child received all her vaccinations here. Before, I would miss immunisation days because of the long distance, but now it’s just a short walk.”
Others noted that the health post has made antenatal care and health education more accessible, giving mothers confidence in safe delivery and equipping families with knowledge on hygiene, nutrition, and malaria prevention.
The health post, strategically set up to serve previously under-serviced villages, offers a variety of essential services.
Nurse Aid Tsitsi Chekete explained, “As a health post, we provide basic treatment, immunisation, family planning, and health education. When we see serious cases, we refer them to Nyanga District Hospital.”
Environmental Health Technician Shamiso Jekete added, “The most common issues we deal with here are malaria, diarrhoeal diseases, and respiratory infections. With this health post in place, we can respond faster and also carry out preventive health campaigns in the surrounding villages.”
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has prioritised the expansion of such facilities in line with Zimbabwe’s Primary Health Care strategy and the drive towards Universal Health Coverage under Vision 2030.
By strengthening community-level facilities, the government is not only tackling health challenges at their roots but also easing congestion at district hospitals.
From basic treatment to life-saving immunisations, Dazi Health Post stands as proof that strong primary health care delivers essential services right at the doorstep of rural communities.
