ZMC rolls out Freedom of Information Act awareness drive

THE Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is on a nationwide drive to unpack and ensure the effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Act as part of efforts to strengthen communication between government and the citizenry.

The programme, which has already reached several provinces, made its latest stop in Masvingo, where public office bearers were engaged in the importance of access to accurate and timely information.

Participants said the initiative was an eye-opener, underscoring the role of information in building trust and reducing speculation.

“We have been reminded that as public office bearers, we must ensure that people we serve have access to information. This reduces false news and allows citizens to contribute to decision-making,” said Zaka RDC Council Chairperson, Ms Fungai Maregedze.

Other participants noted the importance of digital record-keeping for continuity while emphasising that not all information is for public consumption, especially where national security is concerned.

ZMC Chairperson, Professor Ruby Magosvongwe, said the Act should be seen as a bridge between government and citizens rather than a tool for criticism.

“We are stewards to the people, and whatever information we hold must be shared in line with the Constitution, particularly Sections 61 and 62, which provide the operational framework for access to information. However, this is not an absolute right as there are limitations concerning issues such as national security and third-party information,” she explained.

Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, said access to the right information empowers citizens to actively contribute to national development.

“A people with the right information are empowered to make informed decisions and to participate meaningfully in national programmes as we work towards Vision 2030,” he said.

The Freedom of Information Act, which replaced the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), is being positioned as a cornerstone for openness, accountability, and inclusive development.
