Taylor tipped for ODI return as Zim eyes Sri Lanka series

ZIMBABWE Cricket is expected to announce the Chevrons squad for the upcoming white ball series against Sri Lanka, with speculation rife over the possible inclusion of former captain Brendan Taylor.

Taylor, who recently returned to international cricket after serving a three-year ban, has been training with the national team, fuelling speculation that he could be named in the squad.

The 38-year-old batsman remains one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished cricketers, with over 200 ODI appearances and more than 6 000 runs to his name.

While his return will provide the much-needed experience to Zimbabwe’s batting line-up, it is not yet confirmed whether he will make the final cut.

In the last three series, the Chevrons beat Ireland 2-1, after losing 2-0 to Afghanistan and 2-1 to Pakistan.

There is also a distant possibility of Graeme Cremer being considered for a comeback.

The leg-spinner, another former captain, last featured for Zimbabwe in 2019 and has been out of international cricket since then.

He is the current top wicket-taker in the ongoing National Premier League with 23 sculps from seven matches.

Sources within Zimbabwe Cricket, however, indicate that the management believes it might be too soon to reintegrate Cremer into the squad.

All-rounder, Wessly Madhevere, is likely to get a recall after a century and a 50 with a healthy average in five NPL matches.

Besides the expected return of Taylor, Madhevere and the outside possibility of Cremer making it, there is not much expected in terms of changes to the current roster.

The official squad announcement is uncharacteristically late, with the first ODI set for Friday at Harare Sports Club.

The visitors are already in the country after naming their squad a week ago.

The two countries will battle in two ODIs and three T20is.
