THE 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games kicked off in style with an official opening ceremony at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia, this Friday.
Ten member countries proudly marched with their flag bearers, showcasing their national spirit.
The event was attended by prominent guests, including the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mr Nicholas Moyo, and the Director of Sport and Recreation, Eugenia Chidhakwa.
The ceremony was graced by Her Excellency the President of Namibia, Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa, who handed a medal of honour to Dr Chidhakwa.
The action-packed games, which will feature over 2000 athletes competing in 12 sports disciplines, will run until the 13th of this month.
This Saturday, Zimbabwe’s beach volleyball teams will face tough opponents, with the men’s team taking on Malawi and the women’s team battling Lesotho.
Additionally, table tennis will kick off, with Zimbabwe’s men’s team facing Malawi and the women’s team playing Botswana.
