UN Women commends Zim’s commitment to gender equality

THE visiting UN Women delegation has praised government for prioritising gender equity and women’s empowerment issues, pledging to continue collaborating with the country in promoting equality and supporting women rights initiatives.

Speaking during a media briefing in Harare, Chair of the UN Women Executive Board, Ms Nicola Clase, expressed satisfaction with Zimbabwe’s progress in implementing legal and policy frameworks aimed at promoting women’s rights and bridging gender gaps in areas such as digital access, energy, and financing.

“As the UN, we have been working closely with Zimbabwe to implement legal frameworks for gender equality, bridge the digital gap, and address challenges in financing and energy access. We are pleased with the level of cooperation we have received from the Zimbabwean government and stakeholders. Through our collaborative efforts with the government, private sector, and civil society, we have made progress in promoting women’s empowerment, ending gender-based violence, and supporting initiatives that benefit women and girls.”

The UN Women’s approach emphasises partnership, collective action and inclusive engagement to promote gender equality and drive meaningful societal change.

The Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Ms Anna Mutavati, emphasised the importance of inclusive participation and collective action in achieving long-term gender equality goals.

“As we move forward, UN Women’s approach remains grounded in collaboration. Engaging men and boys alongside women and girls is crucial to building an inclusive society. This includes driving conversations, addressing inequalities, and forming diverse partnerships. Sustained advocacy and joint action are essential to creating a just and equitable world.”

The Zimbabwe-UN Women partnership has driven progress in promoting women empowerment and gender equality through joint initiatives, policy development and advocacy, creating a more just and equitable society.
