THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released statistics showing a significant increase in road traffic accidents during the 2025 Easter and Independence holidays compared to the same period last year.

According to the ZRP, a total of 384 road traffic accidents were recorded during the holidays, up from 286 in 2024. However, the number of fatal road accidents decreased from 26 to 21, and the number of people killed dropped from 27 to 24.

Despite the decrease in fatalities, the number of people injured in road traffic accidents increased from 159 to 178.

One notable accident occurred on April 21, along the Harare-Bulawayo road, where a Toyota Hiace kombi veered off the road and overturned, killing four people and injuring 14 others.

The ZRP also reported three hit-and-run fatal road traffic accidents during the holidays, which were recorded in Murewa and Harare resulting in the deaths of three pedestrians.

The first accident occurred on April 19, at the 57 kilometer peg along Mutoko-Chidye dust road, when an unknown motorcyclist hit a pedestrian and sped off. The victim died upon admission at Mutoko Hospital.

In two of the incidents, the victims were hit by unknown vehicles along the Harare-Bulawayo road.

In a statement, the ZRP urged motorists to be responsible on the roads and observe all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists must stop, render first aid, and report road traffic accidents to the Police,” the statement read.

The police are appealing to all road users to prioritise safety and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents.

As the nation continues to experience increased traffic activity, the ZRP remains committed to ensuring road safety and enforcing traffic laws.
