MASHONALAND West province has maintained first position for the second consecutive year after scooping 17 gold medals at the just-ended National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) track and field championships held in Bindura from Wednesday.
The track and field games ended with a 63-member team being selected to represent the country at the Confederation of Southern Africa Schools Sports Association (COSASSA) games set for Eswatini in August.
Mashonaland West Province attributed the win to all-year-round training and grassroots development.
“We are excited to have won again, it shows our strategies are paying off as we train all year round. We participate in all tournaments so our athletes have a lot of track time,” Mashonaland West Team manager Walter Kugarakuripi said.
“We developed a strategy for big schools to develop unknown athletes from the grassroots so that we grow together,” Mashonaland West Team Coach Robin Chipfuwa noted.
Harare was in second place with 14 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals, while Masvingo Province came third with 14 gold, 6 silver and 22 bronze medals.
Hosts, Mashonaland Central Province were in fourth place with 12 gold, 13 silver and three bronze medals.
