THE United Methodist Church (UMC) in Zimbabwe marked a significant leadership transition this Sunday in Harare, as Bishop Eben Nhiwatiwa handed over authority to Bishop Dr Gift Machinga in a symbolic ceremony attended by congregants and church leaders.

In his farewell remarks, outgoing Bishop Nhiwatiwa emphasised the spiritual significance of the transition.

“The church works with symbols, we have the symbol of the cross for attainment. So what we have done today is a transfer of authority and leadership. He is becoming the shepherd now, the good shepherd.”

Bishop Dr. Machinga, the newly inaugurated leader, described the occasion as momentous and urged Zimbabweans to embrace peace.

“This is a momentous occasion for me and the Christian faith of Zimbabwe. My message to Zimbabweans is that of peace, Jesus came preaching peace. Let us live peacefully with our neighbours and everyone.”

Dr. John Mangudya, a prominent church member, expressed joy over the transition, highlighting the strong foundation laid by Bishop Nhiwatiwa.

“Today is a special day for the United Methodist Church with the transition of Bishop Nhiwatiwa and Bishop Machinga, we are so happy. Bishop Nhiwatiwa left a strong foundation which Bishop Machinga will build on and transform the UMC to greater heights.”

The ceremony, attended by clergies and congregants, signifies a new chapter for the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, with expectations of continued growth and spiritual guidance under Bishop Machinga’s leadership.
