A Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officer, Donald Madzinga, has appeared in court on allegations of accepting a bribe and facilitating the escape of fugitive Luke Zinyengerere.

Madzinga, aged 39, was remanded in custody pending his bail application.

According to the prosecution, Madzinga conspired with inmates Tafadzwa Richard Marondera and Zinyengerere, allegedly agreeing to smuggle a firearm into prison facilities in exchange for US$700 to assist their escape.

It is alleged that Tinotenda Zinyengere, a relative of one of the inmates, was tasked with procuring a revolver and delivering it to Madzinga. The accused is said to have used his mobile phone to enable communication between the inmates and Tinotenda to coordinate the plan.

The court heard that Tinotenda managed to raise US$500, which he handed to Madzinga, who then proceeded with the arrangement.

Upon receiving the cash and firearm, Madzinga allegedly delivered the revolver to Luke, who concealed it in their cell for several days before smuggling it into court hidden in his clothing.

Zinyengerere is currently on the run, while Marondera is assisting police with their investigation.
