Women in News Accelerator Programme to empower female journalists

Story by Farai Gwaze

THE Women in News (WIN) Accelerator Programme is set to empower mid-level female journalists in Zimbabwe, by equipping them with leadership skills and mentoring through the WIN guild, which seeks to help in the advancement of their careers

According to WIN Director for Global Advisory, Mrs Susan Makore, the programme targets women in assistant or deputy editor positions, providing them with a nine-month course in leadership and soft skills.

The programme is complemented by the Women in News Guild, which comprises senior female journalists who have graduated from the accelerator programme.

“The idea with the leadership accelerator is it picks women that are around mid-level, like an assistant or deputy editor and then take them on a course of leadership skills and soft skills, during those nine months, they are assigned a coach who will help them develop a roadmap on where they see themselves in five years. The guild is the big sister to the accelerator, these are people who have graduated from the accelerator and are now in those senior positions. These are the ones coming in to hand hold the young ones so they do not leave the industry,” the Global Advisory for the Women in News Director, Mrs Susan Makore said.

The selection process for the programme has been finalised, with participants having been chosen from mainstream media entities.

With the launch of the WIN Accelerator Programme, Zimbabwean female journalists are poised to take their careers to the next level, thanks to the valuable training, mentorship and support provided under the programme.
