THE Zimbabwe National Army says it remains committed to ensuring a conducive and peaceful environment for the country’s developmental aspirations to be fulfilled.

Speaking during the handover takeover ceremony of the command at Khumalo Barracks in Bulawayo this Wednesday, Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe noted that peace and national security feed into government’s inclusive development agenda, adding that officers are expected to shun drug and substance abuse.

“One imperative issue that I demand from you as you take over the reins is to make sure that you continue to ensure that we curb drug and substance abuse among the rank and file. Drugs and substance abuse pose a significant threat to our national security as well as the operational readiness as well as the wellbeing of our troops,” he said.

The army chiefs, who exchanged the button of command, pledged to work hand in glove with other stakeholders to preserve peace and bring development.

“As a team, we shunned corruption and performed to the best of our ability in curbing illegal activities along the borders,” outgoing Commander Brigadier General George Chitsva said.

“Commander ZNA sir, let me hasten to acknowledge the cooperation that exists among our sister security services and other stakeholders as we work towards national development,” incoming Commander Brigadier General Cephas Gurira noted.

In addition to ensuring peace and national security in the country, the Zimbabwe National Army has been spearheading developmental projects across the country as a part of its national social responsibility programmes.
