HONOURABLE Djidda Mahamat of Chad has been elected as the fourth Vice President of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) in an election held in Midrand, South Africa this Thursday.

Honourable Djidda Mamar Mahamat retained his position as the fourth Vice President of the Pan African Parliament after a unanimous vote of 115 out of 121, a race which saw Honourable Anita Ndayizeye of Burundi pulling out.

“The seat fell vacant after the elections in Chad in terms of the PAP and AU rules and procedures. The election was conducted after reaching a quorum and Honourable Mahamat from the Central African Regional Caucus won resoundingly. Things went on peacefully and order retained in the region,” PAP president, Chief Fortune Zephania Charumbira said.

The incoming member of the Bureau says he is re-energised to push for Africa’s progress.

“I am grateful to the members who voted for me and showed confidence. What I’m going to do is to work not just for Chad but Africa in agriculture mining and industry because we have everything,” he said.

This development set against the evolving backdrop of Africa’s dynamic political landscape, underscores PAP’s enduring commitment to democratic governance, regional unity and sustainable development across the continent.

The election comes at a time when PAP is intensifying efforts to enhance its legislative and oversight roles in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

As the PAP continues to push for stronger integration and economic growth, the new Bureau is expected to champion policies that address pressing issues such as youth empowerment, industrialisation and food security.
