THE Harare athletics season kicks off with a cross-country opener at David Livingstone School in Harare this Sunday.

Athletes of all ages and levels are expected to flock to the event, which provides a perfect platform for young runners to gauge their fitness levels before the new school term begins.

Coaches will also use the opportunity to evaluate their athletes’ preparedness for the season.

The event targets athletes from Under-10 to senior categories.

The competition will feature various distance categories, including 8km for senior men and women, 6km for Under-18 boys, Under-20 girls and Under-20 boys, and shorter distances for younger age groups.

“Grassroots is the way to go. We really want to focus on development, and we want to start as low as under 10 because we want to get these kids excited and groom them to be the future champions we want,” said Aaron Whyte, Harare Athletics Board chairperson.

Meanwhile, the Harare Athletics Board has lined up major events, with the track and field championships set to take place on the 12th of this month at the University of Zimbabwe.

The Harare athletics cross-country selection event is scheduled for the 2nd of February, followed by the national competition on the 22nd.
