THE African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five is looking at ways of improving Southern Africa’s performance in continental and international sports competitions.

This came out during the ongoing AUSC meetings that are currently on in Harare.

The African Union Sports Council Region Five executive is in Zimbabwe hosting a series of meetings.

One of the key issues that is under spotlight is the perfomances of the region in continental and international competitions.

AUSC Region Five’s chief executive officer, Stanley Mutoya said, “The development commission met yesterday and deliberated on the region’s performance and how to define success. It also looked at the region’s performance at the just ended Olympics and the African Games and we also looking ahead to creating a regional high-performance academy.”

All the 10 Region Five countries were represented at the Olympics, while five member countries were at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in football and the region finished third at the African Games in Accra earlier this year.

Government is happy with the deliberation thus far and is looking forward to more events.

“We are geared to be hosting the permanent secretaries that will come for the meetings then after that, we expect Troika – these are the sports ministers from the region then we will also host other events,” the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture’s Acting Chief Director, Dr Eugenia Chidhakwa said.

Apart from the meetings, there will be a cultural night and a ground breaking ceremony for the Regional Sports Museum that is expected to be constructed at the National Sports Stadium.
