President Mnangagwa arrives in Baku for COP29

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29).

The head of state was received at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira as well as officials from the host country’s government.

President Mnangagwa is expected to meet with the President of the Republjc of Azerbaijan Iiham Aliyev at the Baku Stadium, the venue for COP29.

Delegates from across the globe who include heads of state and diplomats from close to 200 countries are converging in Baku for the yearly conference where discussions on climate change take centre stage.

Among the areas of focus this year will be climate financing.

President Mnangagwa has brought attention on how Africa continues to endure the effects of global warming and suffers the consequences of this yet, it’s among the least responsible for emissions.

African leaders are expected to speak with one voice during COP29, given the adverse effects of climate change which have resulted in severe drought, with vulnerable communities being hard hit by food insecurity.
