THE United Nations has expressed commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s Development Agenda, with emphasis on integrating global access to food systems, energy enhancing digital connectivity, and advancing social protection.
Diplomats, government officials, and none state actors converged in Harare this Wednesday to mark the country’s commemorations of the 79th Anniversary of the United Nations.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr Edward Kallon expressed commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s developmental aspirations.
“Key initiatives in Zimbabwe include collaboration among various stakeholders delivering US$500 million annually in development programmes under the Zimbabwe UN Cooperation Framework and past contribution underscore our commitment to Zimbabwe’s development,” Mr Kallon said.
“What we are commemorating today is marked by the UN pact of the future to global commitment to ensure peace. Through a number of initiatives we remain steadfast working with government of Zimbabwe to ensure sustainable development in different sectors,” European Union Ambassador and Head of Delegation, His Excellency Mr Jobst von Kirchmann added.
Government as well as none state actors noted that there is harmony between UN goals and the national blue print, the National Development Strategy One in propelling sustainable development.
“We remain grateful to the UN for its support in addressing the demands of our country. There is synergy between the priorities of the UN and Zimbabwe in the context of both NDS1 and UNSDCF, which both set out strategies aimed at achieving economic growth and stability, food and nutrition security, structural transformation, and value chains among many common priorities. In practice, this has meant that our efforts have been harmonious as we all work together towards common goals,” said the Acting Chief Director Political Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr Mqabuko Spencer Dube.
“At Geo Pomona Waste Management, we are proud to align ourselves with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in our commitment to combat climate change. The waste sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 3.42% of national emissions.
“The primary gases of concern are methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. In response to this challenge, we have implemented effective waste management solutions designed to minimise these harmful emissions and promote a cleaner environment,” Executive Chairman Geo Pomona Waste Management Executive Director, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said.
The belated 79th Anniversary Commemorations of the United Nations are themed: “Sustainability in Action”, with climate change peacekeeping missions to addressing hunger, poverty, health crises and education disparities being major highlights.
