Howard High School celebrates 100 years

The Salvation Army Church has committed to continue collaborating with government in the delivery of quality and inclusive education as Howard High School celebrated its centenary.

A festive mood engulfed Howard High school this Saturday as they celebrated an important milestone to mark 100 years of existence.

Parents, teachers and learners expressed excitement at being part of the 100-year journey of the school founded in 1923.

“I am happy to be a learner at this school. Its shows us that the school has a long history and it pushes us to work hard and become torch bearers in the society,” said a student.

A teacher said, “I am happy God has allowed me to be there when the 100 years are celebrated, we improved the pass rate immensely from ‘O’ Level from 54 to 97 and ‘A’ Level we are maintaining 100 percent, but what please me the most is character building.”

“We are happy as parents of Howard high school. The school has grown and we have developed. With the results we are seeing, we are happy and we are also helping in the community. Our students are doing great things in the community out there,” said a parent

In a speech read on his behalf by Salvation Army Women’s Ministries Territorial president commissioner, Tracy Kasusu; Territorial Commander Daniel Kasusu committed to continue fostering a culture of excellence integrity and service at the school.

“As we look to the future, we reaffirm our commitment as the Salvation Army to provide inclusive quality education as espoused by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, empowering learners with critical life skills for the 21st century challenges.”

Chief Chiweshe paid tribute to the Salvation Army church for uplifting the community.

He said, “This is an inheritance that has been passed down over the years, as Chief i am happy we have such a school which is developmental. I want to pay homage to the founders of the school, they had good foundations. I also want to pay tribute to my forefathers who allowed the missionaries to come in this area.”

The celebrations coincided with commissioning of a vehicle and prize giving ceremony.

The school formerly named Howard Institute located in Nyachuru village of Chiweshe communal lands was founded in 1923 by Major James Barker and Capitain Leonard Kirby of the Salvation Army.
