The mop-up vetting exercise for non-combatants and war collaborators will be held from the 25th of this month to the 4th of October.
Cabinet has approved the Ministry of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs’ nationwide vetting programme to ascertain the credentials of members and to ensure that bonafide veterans of the liberation struggle are accurately recognised for their contributions.
The Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Senator Monica Mavhunga briefed the media in Harare this Monday on the modalities.
“This mop-up exercise is a crucial initiative which is scheduled to run from 25 September to 4 October 2024 targeting individuals who did not get a chance in 2022. The ministry expects to vet approximately 93,363 candidates from the two categories of non-combatant cadres. Applicants are invited to report for vetting at centres where vetting teams will be deployed to verify their credentials. Vetting centres for collaborators will be in the areas they operated in during the liberation war. The vetting period is 10 days and vetting teams will move according to deployment, she said.
She also clarified the steps and requirements for membership.
“Please note that all applicants, non-combatant cadres and war collaborators are required to bring original national identity documents or valid passports together with legible copies of the same documents. At the conclusion of the vetting exercise, the names of persons who will have been identified as war collaborators and non-combatant cadres shall be listed in the government gazette and be deemed to be provisionally accredited for a period of thirty days in order to all members of the public to make any representations after which they will be deemed to be finally accredited as veterans of the liberation struggle.”
The programme was launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in June 2021 to take stock of the members who contributed to the liberation of the country.
