THE Zimbabwe darts team is aiming for the gold medal at the Region 5 Darts Championships in Eswatini.
Mashonaland Central is dominating the women’s national darts team, with four players joining the team that will battle for honours at the tournament, which kicks off on August 24 till September 3.
Sending off the players in Bindura on Friday, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, who was represented by the provincial chief accountant, Ms Precious Chifamba, urged the players to excel for their country.
“As you embark on this journey, we are filled with a profound sense of gratitude and admiration. You are not only representing Mashonaland Central, but you are carrying the hopes and aspirations of our entire nation on your shoulders.
“Your achievements will not only bring glory to the province but will also inspire generations of young girls to follow in your footsteps.”
National Darts Association of Zimbabwe vice president, Mrs Jane Mushininga, who also plays for Bindura University, said the team is targeting the gold medal after getting bronze in the last tournament.
“I am so delighted that we are going to represent the country in Eswatini. Many people wish to go for that tournament and to represent the country. There was an Easter tournament and a heroes’ tournament to select people who would go and represent the national team, so people are chosen by merit. Mashonaland Central has the biggest chunk of people who will represent the country.”
The players who will join other groups from youths to veterans on the road to Eswatini are playing a key role in changing the negative perceptions about darts and expressed a wish for establishment of more facilities to support the sport in order to attract people of all ages.
