FADING giants CAPS United blew the title race wide open after edging FC Platinum in an exciting Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Rufaro Stadium this Sunday.
CAPS United’s one-nil victory over FC Platinum this Sunday saw Simba Bhora being the biggest beneficiary from the weekend action.
The win was Makepekepe’s first victory in six matches, but in the greater scheme of things the result saw Simba Bhora cementing the top spot after beating Yadah one-nil on Saturday.
The victory over Yadah saw the Shamva-based side leap to the top spot with 43 points from 22 matches.
On Sunday, former champions FC Platinum had a chance to reclaim the top spot, but CAPS United would have none of that after getting their first win against the Zvishavane-based side in six years.
Despite the defeat, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza believes its game on.
“We have been there before and we needed to keep fighting on and it is game on 13 games to go we have to fight and see how it goes at the end but we will fight.”
FC Platinum are a point behind Simba Bhora while defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars are on 37 points after mastering a fourth consecutive goalless draw.
Highlanders are still within fighting distance with 36 points, with Manica Diamonds in fifth with 35 points.
At the other end, Hwange managed a point from the weekend, but that was not enough to lift them from the foot of the table.
Chipangano have 17 points, Arenel have 18, while Chegutu Pirates are on 19 points, with TelOne not too far ahead with 21 points.
