Muchipisi Irrigation Scheme set to surpass wheat target

Story by Courage Bushe

More than 80 farmers under the Presidential Winter Wheat Scheme at Muchipisi Irrigation Scheme in Mberengwa District are targeting a yield of over five tonnes per hectare after putting more than 55 hectares under wheat this season.

Their wheat crop is already at the booting stage, hence the farmers are expecting a better harvest compared to last year.

“We want to thank our Agritex officers and government for the knowledge they give us, we are anticipating good harvests this winter season because we got everything on time,” said a farmer.

Another said, “Our crops are thriving so well, we expect at least 5 tonnes per hectare. If we were to get modern irrigation equipment, I assure you of great work from this scheme.”

The government is impressed by the ongoing transformative progress at the irrigation scheme.

“This year, we have increased our wheat hectarage to more than 55 hectares. This year’s wheat is in good condition and we are expecting five-six tonnes per hectare. The villagers and the community at large are very excited about this development and I believe this crop will transform the local community,” said Mberengwa Zone 5 Agritex supervisor, Mrs Elsaphina Maphosa.

The Second Republic is targeting the transformation of rural and urban economies through enhanced food production, with an output of 600 000 tonnes of wheat being targeted this season.
