UN urges Israel to ensure access to humanitarian assistance in Gaza

Story by Vivian Bangamu

UNITED Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Israel to ensure complete and unfettered access to humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza, amid warnings of an imminent famine.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis conducted in December last year, famine is expected to occur by the end of May this year if there is no ceasefire agreement and distribution of food aid is hampered.

According to the report, famine is imminent in the northern parts of Gaza as conditions to prevent starvation have not been met.

Chief Economist at the UN World Food Programme, Arif Husain added his voice saying UN agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire for them to bring in food aid, which is enough to feed around 2.2 million people.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry has disclosed in a statement that the death toll in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing Israeli attacks has risen to over 31 700, with more than 73 700 people having been wounded.
