Lady Cheetahs bow out of Olympic qualification race

Story by Raynald Ngwarati

ZIMBABWE’S senior ladies’ Sevens Rugby team had a bad day out in their Rugby Africa Olympics 2024 Women 7s Qualifiers in Tunisia this Saturday.

A nightmarish day on the rugby field was summed up by a 22-nil loss to Uganda as Zimbabwe’s dreams to make it to the 2024 Paris Olympics were dashed.

The Lady Cheetahs failed to challenge any of their three opponents in Group A as they crashed out of the tournament having registered three straight defeats.

Kick-starting their campaign against their neighbours South Africa, Zimbabwe had a slow start as they lost by 26 points to five in their group opener before losing to hosts Tunisia by the same score line in their second match.

With two straight defeats, fate had been sealed that the Lady Cheetahs would not see fruition of the dream to Paris, despite being left with one match against Uganda.

Zimbabwe were seeking consolation from the match, but evidently, it was a huge ask lying in front of them.

The shadow of misfortune continued to cast a dark cloud over Zimbabwe’s senior ladies’ Sevens Rugby team as they could not score against the Cranes who won with a whopping 22 points.

In the end, lady luck was not on Zimbabwe’s side as the Lady Cheetahs crashed out of the Olympic qualification race without tasting victory.
