Inaugural inter-provincial handball tournament kicks off

Story by Raynald Ngwarati

MALE and female teams from across Zimbabwe had a chance to showcase their mettle in provincial colours at the 2023 Inter-provincial Handball Tournament at the University of Zimbabwe grounds which kicked off this Saturday.

Provinces like Manicaland, Mashonaland West and Central were all represented at the inaugural provincial tournament organised by the Zimbabwe Handball Federation.

Handball players who graced the inter-provincial tournament were grateful for the opportunity to develop their skills as well as have their talent identified.

“You get enough game time, everybody gets time to play, you show your skills in time you’re given by the coach so for me, everything is great,” said Harare province player, Yanai Manyonga.

Mashonaland West player, Tanaka Msindo said, “I’m very grateful that I was chosen to represent Mash West as an individual and I’m very grateful that my team is playing this tournament. We’re grateful to mix and mingle with different kinds of people from different places.”

“It’s developing me and it’s developing our team skills, communication and the ability to play handball as a player. This tournament is offering handball players from around Zimbabwe an opportunity to play handball because some of the players did not have the opportunity to play for clubs but this will give them a chance to be scouted,” said Mash Central player Tatenda Mangwaira.

Meanwhile, attention now shifts to the semi-finals which will be played tomorrow as Harare province meets Midlands in the semi-final, with Mashonaland Central facing Manicaland in the men’s category.

On the ladies’ section, Manicaland will play Harare in the first semi-final tomorrow whilst a Mashonaland derby between Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central will determine who plays who in the ladies’ final tomorrow.
