GURUVE residents have expressed mixed reactions following the sentencing of Anymore Zvitsva to an effective 89-year prison term after he pleaded guilty to multiple counts of rape, attempted murder and robbery linked to a wave of attacks that terrorised communities between late last year and early this year.
While many residents welcomed the conviction as a major step towards justice, others argued that the sentence was too lenient considering the gravity of the crimes and the lasting trauma suffered by victims.
The attacks, which sent shockwaves across Guruve and surrounding areas, left communities living in fear as families grappled with the emotional and psychological impact of the incidents.
One survivor of rape and attempted murder said the sentence would never reverse the damage caused to her life.
She said the ordeal destroyed her marriage and left her unable to work, adding that the emotional scars remain deep despite the court ruling.
Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, said the conviction now allows Government and stakeholders to focus on trauma counselling and healing for victims and affected families.
As calm slowly returns to Ruyamuro Growth Point, many victims are still battling trauma, with communities now awaiting the outcome of Zvitsva’s pending murder trial.
