EGYPT’S fairytale FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end after defending champions Argentina staged a dramatic late comeback to claim a 3-2 victory in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday.

Making their first appearance in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, the Pharaohs looked destined for one of the greatest upsets in tournament history after racing into a commanding two-goal lead and holding firm for 79 minutes.

However, Argentina mounted a remarkable revival.

Cristian Romero ignited the comeback by pulling a goal back before Lionel Messi restored parity to shift the momentum firmly in favour of the holders.

With extra time looming, Enzo Fernández rose highest to head home the winner in the 92nd minute, completing a stunning turnaround and sending Argentina into the quarter-finals.

Despite the painful defeat, Egypt’s campaign will be remembered as a landmark achievement, having reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.

Their elimination leaves Morocco as Africa’s sole remaining representative at the global showpiece.

The quarter-finals begin on Thursday with Morocco facing France in a highly anticipated encounter.

Friday’s programme features three heavyweight fixtures as Spain take on Belgium, Norway face England, while Argentina continue their title defence against Switzerland.
