Mighty Warriors jet off to Angola for AWCON qualifier

Story by Anashe Murombedzi, Sports Reporter

THE Zimbabwe women’s football team, the Mighty Warriors, are off to Luanda, Angola, ready to take on the hosts in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), first-leg qualifier.

As the girls departed for Angola this Monday, head coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, saying they are geared up for the match against Angola slated for the Estadio Joaquim Dinis in Luanda on Thursday.

“We have had a good two weeks of preparation and the players have responded positively. We are not at 100% fitness levels, but we are at a good percentage to perform well,” Sibanda said.

The Mighty Warriors will hold training sessions in the Angolan capital this Tuesday and Wednesday, before plunging into the real battle on Thursday.

The return leg is scheduled to take place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria a week later.

The winner of the tie will face Malawi in the final qualifying round in October for a place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

Malawi have already booked their place in the next round of qualifiers after the withdrawal of Congo.
