THE Government has called upon parents, churches and community leaders to assist schools in inculcating discipline among children as cases of drug abuse continue to surge among learners.
This was said by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Ms Tumisung Thabelo at Mutendi Primary School where she presented the school with the Secretary’s Merit award.
“Cases of drug abuse among school children are worrisome even to us. However, everyone must play his or her part, especially parents and the church. Let us discipline our children so that they are not a menace at school,” she said.
She also challenged schools to engage in projects for the benefit of learners and keep them occupied.
“All school heads, it’s high time we commercialise our schools for the benefit of our learners and to also get income.”
The Zion Christian Church led by Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi is working on establishing five schools in support of the government.
“Our leader is passionate about education and as a church, in support of the government’s thrust of ensuring access to education. We are putting in place five schools in the next three years,” said Mr Raymond Muringani, Zion Christian Church’s secretary for education.
The school, which was awarded the 2019 Secretary’s Merit award, received 40 tablets, laptops, and books among many accessories to enhance their learning.
