THE late liberation war heroine, Cde Margaret Chikunguru, who died on Wednesday has been buried at her farm in Mazowe.
Mourners, who gathered at Cde Chikunguru’s Summerdale Farm in Mazowe gave a befitting send-off to the liberation war heroine who died on Wednesday.
“She was a unifier and a humble woman. We thank the government for according her this status,” said one of the mourners.
Another added, “This woman was a dedicated cadre, she never sold out. We have lost a giant. The vacuum she has left will never be filled.”
“The vacuum which she left will be hard to fill. I, therefore, encourage everyone present to work to safeguard the milestone that she achieved during her well-lived life,” another said.
The family of the Liberation War heroine has lost a mother, sister and aunt who was passionate about education.
“My sister was a loving person who took care of me. I have lost my shield and protector. I was staying with her till the time of her death,” said her brother, Mr Sydney Chikungura.
“Mother was a woman who pushed you to reach your best capabilities. She was a person who did not quit once she set her mind on something. She was my biggest cheerleader and I am what I am because of her,” said the late’s daughter and ZBC CEO, Ms Adelaide Chikunguru.
Cde Chikunguru, who succumbed to a heart ailment this Wednesday is the mother to ZBC’s Chief Executive Officer.
Born on the 7th of June in 1960, Cde Chikunguru did her primary education at Svikiro and Maria primary schools and went to St Killian’s High School in Rusape for her secondary education.
As the wave of nationalism gripped the nation, she joined the liberation struggle, crossed to Mozambique in 1976 and took the name Cde No More Tribalism.
Cde Chikunguru trained at Chimoio camp where she also survived the Chimoio attack after which she went on to train in Denmark.
After independence, she joined the government as a secretary and was a provincial member of the ruling ZANU PF War Veterans wing.
She is survived by her three children and grandchildren.
