Met department allays fears of flash floods

Story by John Nhandara

THE Meteorological Services Department says the current wet spell is set to continue this week and allayed fears of flash floods in some areas.

According to the department’s Deputy Director Mrs Linia Gopo, localised heavy rains and strong winds are expected in most parts of the country, characterised by thunder, lightning and hailstones.

“In numerous parts of Zimbabwe, we had a substantial rainfall. Falls above 50mm for example Murehwa had 77mm, and Macheke 66mm. Because of these rains that we are receiving, there are high likelihood of flash flooding especially in our cities because of poor drainage systems. We expect these rains to persist into Friday,” she said.

The Meteorological Services Department also anticipates low-lying areas including Muzarabani, Save and Zambezi Valley to experience flooding while the public has been implored to avoid crossing flooded rivers.
