THE country’s border modernisation programme is bearing fruit, with over 200 000 people having passed through the country’s ports of entry by Christmas Day.
Zimbabwe has intensified the modernisation of ports of entry, including the Beitbridge Border Post Expansion Project.
According to revelations from the Immigration Department, an increase in travellers was recorded at the country’s ports of entry this festive season, giving everyone a chance to spend Christmas Holidays with loved ones.
Chief Immigration Officer Mrs Respect Gono said, “Statistics at hand show that we had more inbound travellers passing through our ports of entry/exit in the period leading up to this year’s festivities. As of 25 December 2023, 250 000 travellers had passed through the country’s borders.”
The Immigration Department says the ongoing upgrade of the country’s ports of entry has facilitated the smooth movement of travellers.
“While we recorded a record increase in the number of travellers passing through the country’s busiest port, that is Beitbridge, there was a remarkable improvement in the handling of travellers, owing primarily to the modernisation of the border post which saw the separation of traffic,” added Mrs Gono.
Zimbabwe’s Border Posts Modernisation Plan is also aimed at reducing congestion, facilitating a One-Stop border post and monitoring leakages and smuggling.
