THE national crop outlook is looking good, with farmers having planted over one comma seven million hectares, thanks to the rains being received countrywide.
The rains being received countrywide have brought back hope to farmers and generally, the maize crop, tobacco and traditional grains are in good condition while farmers who are into soya bean production are doing well.
“The crops have generally recovered from moisture stress and the soya is excellent,” said a farmer who spoke to the ZBC News.
Vast tracks of flourishing maize at various farms across the country have given hope of a bumper harvest.
“We planted the early crop and our crop struggled due to recent dry spell, but the maize has recovered very well and we will achieve bumper harvest,” another farmer said.
Latest statistics reflect a positive picture for maize, traditional grains and tobacco production.
Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Professor Obert Jiri said, “The crops are looking very good following the rains, our farmers have done well with planted hectarage now at 1.7 million hectares. We are on track to achieve our targets and food security.”
With the Meteorological Services Department predicting normal to above normal rainfall in the second half of this summer season, if all farmers exercise best agronomic practices, the country can achieve national food security.
