Cops up for bribery

Story by Fungai Jachi

Two police officers from Mutare who allegedly demanded a bribe from a motorist were nabbed and arraigned in court charged with bribery

Dudzai Jennifer Chiponda (47) and Glynislynn Mutsago (38) were arrested after they were allegedly lured to Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) offices by a taxi driver after demanding a bribe from him.

It is alleged that the pair had arrested the taxi driver for illegally pirating before demanding a US$90 in exchange for the release of his vehicle.

Further allegations are that the driver pleaded that he did not have the money and requested that they go to his employer’s residence to collect the money.

He drove to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) offices under the pretext that he was going to his employer. Upon getting there, he parked outside the gate and entered the premises leaving the accused outside.

He allegedly reported the matter to ZACC officials who then accompanied him posing as his employer.

The duo allegedly insisted on their demand for a bribe but the ZACC official successfully negotiated that the amount be reduced to US$20.

The accused persons were given the money and tried to run away when officers from ZACC arrested them.

The two police officers were granted bail and will be back in court next week.
