GOVERNMENT has intensified the fight against drug and substance abuse, with more than 8 000 drug-related arrests recorded nationwide during the first half of the year as authorities strengthen law enforcement and expand community-based prevention programmes.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Drugs and Narcotics Unit arrested 8 374 suspects between January and 14 July as the nationwide crackdown gathered momentum.
Police also seized six tonnes of cannabis, 3.8 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine and 156 grammes of cocaine, dealing a significant blow to drug trafficking networks.
District Community Relations Officer, Detective Assistant Inspector Tendai Muchengi said all drug-related offences are now referred to the courts, regardless of the quantity involved.
“Stakeholders must understand that if we arrest a person, we no longer have the capacity to fine at any level. That case has to be taken to court no matter how small the amount is,” he said.
Alongside law enforcement, Government is strengthening Provincial Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse Committees to expand prevention, awareness and rehabilitation programmes across the country’s districts.
Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo said the allocation of resources reflects Government’s commitment to addressing the drug scourge.
“Allow me to sincerely appreciate the Second Republic for allocating ZiG4.5 million towards drug and substance abuse programming in Mashonaland Central Province. This significant investment demonstrates that Government is backing its commitment with tangible resources. It is now our collective responsibility to ensure these resources translate into measurable impact within our communities,” he said.
Drug and alcohol abuse survivor Alec Moyo of Guruve urged those battling addiction to seek rehabilitation.
“I joined a group that takes Tumbwa. These things affected me to the extent that I went for three days without eating. I eventually checked into rehabilitation. Detoxification helps,” he said.
Authorities say combining stricter law enforcement with greater investment in prevention and rehabilitation will strengthen the national anti-drug campaign, while emphasising that its long-term success depends on the active participation of families, communities and institutions in protecting young people from drug and substance abuse.
