THE City of Harare Health Department has confirmed a scabies outbreak in Hopley, Stoneridge and surrounding communities, with most reported cases involving children under the age of 12.
The outbreak was first detected in mid-June, prompting health authorities to activate emergency response measures to contain the spread of the highly contagious skin disease.
Scabies is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, resulting in intense itching, skin rashes and sores caused by excessive scratching. If left untreated, it can lead to secondary bacterial infections.
Health officials said the disease spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and the sharing of contaminated clothing, bedding and towels. They stressed that early detection and treatment are critical to preventing further transmission.
Residents experiencing persistent itching, skin rashes or other symptoms associated with scabies have been urged to seek immediate medical attention at their nearest health facility.
Authorities also advised that household members and close contacts of infected individuals should be assessed and treated to prevent re-infection.
The City of Harare has urged residents to maintain good personal hygiene, avoid sharing clothing, towels and bedding, and wash these items regularly in hot water before drying them thoroughly.
Patients have also been encouraged to complete the full course of treatment prescribed by healthcare workers.
In response to the outbreak, the City Health Department has intensified disease surveillance, case management, health education and community awareness campaigns.
Rapid response teams are working with affected communities to identify cases, provide treatment and curb further transmission.
The City of Harare has appealed to residents to cooperate with health personnel and follow all public health guidelines as efforts continue to contain the outbreak. Residents requiring further information or assistance have been advised to visit their nearest health facility.
