DEFENDING champions Scottland took another giant stride towards retaining the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title after dispatching TelOne 2-0 at Rufaro Stadium this Friday to open up a temporary 10-point lead at the summit.
23 goals scored, nine league matches without conceding, and now a temporary 10-point cushion at the top.
Scottland’s relentless march continued after easing past TelOne 2-0 to move to 49 points.
Khama Billiat continued his brilliant form, scoring twice in the second half after the visitors had put up stubborn resistance before the break.
Fellow veteran, Knowledge Musona had a hand in both goals as the experienced campaigners continue to lead from the front.
With just 12 matches remaining, the defending champions are beginning to look like a side counting down to another league title.
Scottland coach Norman Mapeza believes the team is jelling at exactly the right time.
“The front four have been fantastic; even in midfield, Shidolo and Msebe have been playing well. The defence has been good as well, but we can’t take anything away from Musona and Khama; their contribution is massive,” he said.
TelOne, meanwhile, has different challenges.
“I believe we can still survive; the matches are there to pick up enough points,” TelOne coach Saul Chaminuka said.
Action continues this Saturday as Highlanders visit FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium, Simba Bhora host Bulawayo Chiefs at Wadzanayi, Chicken Inn entertain Manica Diamonds at Luveve and ZPC Kariba welcome FC Hunters to Nyamhunga, with the focus on the title and survival races.
Second-placed Hardrock face a stern examination against fourth-placed Herentals on Sunday at Rufaro; Dynamos, also with a match in hand, travel to MWOS knowing victory will keep them firmly in the title race, while Agama and Triangle United square off in a crucial relegation battle.
