Masvingo City has welcomed the launch of the My Age Africa Mobile Clinic, describing it as a timely intervention that will ease pressure on public health health facilities while expanding access to healthcare for young people and other underserved communities.

A new chapter in community healthcare has begun in Masvingo following the launch of the My Age Africa Mobile Clinic, an initiative expected to bring essential health services closer to residents while reducing the burden on the city’s healthcare system.

The mobile clinic, which will focus on adolescent and youth-friendly health services, has been welcomed by young people, who say it will help eliminate barriers such as transport costs and long distances to healthcare facilities.

“As youths, we are happy with this mobile clinic because, instead of travelling to the clinic, it will be coming to our communities, reducing transport costs. Adolescents also feel more comfortable receiving healthcare services in a less crowded environment,” said one youth.

Masvingo City Director of Health Services, Mrs Hazel Madamombe, said the initiative complements the city’s healthcare delivery system by reaching vulnerable groups that are often underserved.

“As the City of Masvingo, we have at times struggled to provide healthcare services to vulnerable groups such as sex workers. The mobile clinic will enable us to deliver healthcare services to them at their convenience,” she said.

My Age Africa Executive Director, Mr Onward Chirinda, said the mobile clinic will also play a key role in addressing the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse among young people.

“More than 200 people in Masvingo were admitted to Ngomahuru Hospital due to drug and substance abuse. We commend Government for its continued efforts to improve healthcare through various policies and interventions aimed at enhancing access to quality health services,” he said.

The launch comes as Government and its development partners continue investing in innovative healthcare delivery models, including mobile clinics, to complement the construction of hospitals and clinics and accelerate progress towards universal access to quality healthcare.
