THE Zimbabwe Sables opened their 2026 Nations Cup campaign with a 36-26 defeat to Tonga after a spirited second-half fightback fell short on Saturday.

Zimbabwe trailed 19-5 at half-time after struggling to contain a disciplined Tongan side that capitalised on its early opportunities. Simba Mandioma scored the Sables’ opening try to keep the hosts within reach.

The Sables returned with greater intensity after the break, with Godfrey Muzanargwo crossing for Zimbabwe’s third try before Edward Sigauke, nicknamed “The Transporter”, added the fourth as the visitors mounted a late comeback.

Despite the improved second-half display, Zimbabwe were unable to erase the first-half deficit as Tonga held on to secure a 36-26 victory.

The Sables will now shift their focus to their next Nations Cup fixture against Canada on 11 July, as they seek to revive their campaign.

The tournament forms a key part of Zimbabwe’s preparations for next year’s global showpiece, providing valuable international competition as the team continues to build towards rugby’s biggest stage.
