THE Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill has entered the committee stage in the Senate following two days of debate by senators.
A total of 55 senators contributed to the debate, with 50 expressing support for the Bill and five opposing it.
Senators from both sides of the House shared their views on the proposed amendments, including provisions relating to the extension of the electoral cycle from five to seven years and the appointment of an additional 10 senators by the President in consultation with Parliament.
Several senators also welcomed amendments concerning the Zimbabwe Gender Commission and the role of traditional leaders.
Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi, described the level of participation in the debate as historic.
“It is historic to have such a large number of senators debating the Bill. Fifty-five senators debated the Bill and only five were against it. This enhances democracy and creates an inclusive environment,” he said.
The committee stage will be followed by the third reading of the Bill before it proceeds to the voting stage.
