CHINA has launched a capacity-building programme for media officials and journalists from countries across the Global South, focusing on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in multimedia production and content dissemination.

The initiative, titled Seminar on News Officials and Journalists from the Global South, began in Beijing on Tuesday and brings together media practitioners and officials from Africa, Asia and other developing regions.

The programme is designed to enhance participants’ capabilities in using AI-driven technologies to create, manage and distribute multimedia content across a range of digital platforms.

The seminar is being organised by the China Broadcasting International Economic and Technical Cooperation with support from the Chinese government through the International Cooperation Department of the National Radio and Television Administration.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Director General of the International Cooperation Department, Zhou Jihong, reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening media cooperation with countries of the Global South and supporting the development of modern media production capabilities.

CBIC Deputy General Manager, He Dongbo, said the Global South is home to the majority of the world’s population, making it important for journalists from developing nations to play a greater role in shaping international narratives and promoting a more balanced global information landscape.

The programme brings together participants from several countries, including Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Panama and Turkey.

As part of the programme, delegates will tour leading Chinese media organisations to gain first-hand insight into how advanced technologies, including AI and digital production tools, are being integrated into modern news gathering, content creation and distribution.

The initiative reflects growing cooperation between China and countries of the Global South in media development, digital innovation and professional skills training.
