SIX hectares of land in Whitecliff have been allocated to veterans of the liberation struggle for the development of market stalls, in a move aimed at enhancing economic empowerment and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for former freedom fighters.

The land, which was handed over to veterans of the liberation struggle in Whitecliff, Zvimba district this Saturday, marks a major milestone in securing sustainable livelihoods for former freedom fighters through public-private partnerships.

“This is a positive development in that it speaks to the empowerment of us as veterans of the liberation struggle,” War Veterans Association’s Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Cornelius Muwoni said.

“This gives us an opportunity to be self-reliant. When you empower freedom fighters it means they no longer rely on the fiscus but on other projects,” a freedom fighter weighed in.

Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Senator Monica Mavhunga, said the project demonstrates Government’s commitment to ensuring that veterans actively participate in the country’s economic development.

“This event signified a shared commitment to empowerment of veterans of the liberation struggle demonstrate positive impact when private sector works hand-in-hand with government for community development goals.”

Development of market stalls will create a platform for veterans to generate income.

The initiative forms part of a broader Government programme aimed at economically empowering veterans of the liberation struggle through land allocation, business opportunities and other income-generating projects.
